History of Grama Panchayat
Areekode is a village of significant historical and cultural importance, situated on the banks of the Chaliyar River. It is believed that the name “Areekode” originated from the settlement of a community that processed iron from ore resembling rice grains.
The centuries-old Saligrama Temple, the “Kodiyettam” of 1914, and the Malabar Rebellion of 1921 are among the important events and landmarks that have contributed to the historical significance of Areekode. The military camp established by the British still exists in the area.
The establishment of the first school in 1907, followed by educational institutions such as Oriental High School, Government High School, and Sullamussalam Arabic College, made significant contributions to the educational development of the region.
Festivals such as Muttungal Nercha, along with cultural organizations including YMA, YMB, and Ugrapuram Desasevini, have played an important role in strengthening the cultural development and social life of the community.
With progress in transportation, administration, and education, Areekode has developed into a progressive village where people from different sections of society live together in harmony.
